new york s gunnar haslam appears on l.i.e.s. with his third lp for the label titled lebesgue measures. picking up where he left off on his last long player mirrors and copulation we hear an evolution in his sound throughout the nine songs. still there are the understated yet grooving acid lines next to carefully programmed drums and attention to surrounding detail which creates beautiful and balanced atmospheres. there is a brightness coupled with an underlying sullenness tapping into some sort of mystical and seemingly obscured narrative which moves through the entire record. deep and immersive stuff to say the least.

mothball record starts its 2016 release schedule with a bang by releasing their first lp. originally produced in a tiny edition of only 100 copies back in 87, this dark masterpiece from prolific italian artist deca finally appears as an official reissue on mothball (in collaboration with bordello a parigi) remastered from the original tapes. -synthetic lips- is an absolutely diverse album spanning industrial, synth-pop, ambient and even elements of new age...some tracks will hit immediately and others will reward repeated listening.

over the past several years, j(ay).a.d has released several eps touching on footwork, dubstep, grime and dancehall, approaching dance music with a wide open lens that tends to blur accepted genre lines. a bjork co-sign earlier last year jettisoned the amsterdam-based artist into the popular consciousness. raised in suriname, j(ay).a.d is the consummate dance music outsider and despite living in amsterdam, his music hardly ever fits in with the citys house and techno hegemony. the ogri ai ep is very much a blueprint record, simultaneously paranoid and dark, its seeped in industrial dread and natural beauty. and while many of j(ay).a.ds contemporaries attempt to create more alien sounding music at the expense of a human element, the ogri ai ep has been a overlooked milestone for the hybrid footwork & grime realm, and its now back on re-stock.

who would have ever thought? the g man found himself a protege. after the odd 50+ solo releases offered through his phoenix g imprint mr.g has found himself a young producer that has a style that connects with the phoenix g output thus far. with g opening his bag of tricks to him, this cant go wrong. mysterious jayson wynters offers a 4 track record that is hazy, technoid and threads into deep territories every now and then.

this is the second record of the modern house quintet, a french band who makes house music. like the former release, this new one features two house/deep house tracks: * marmande* starts with a lush pad and staccato bassline soon joined by percussions and an organ chord. the second part of the track introduces gradually a flute line plus a powerful open hi-hat. * bellevue* opens with a pad and a filtered rhodes synth supported by a low-fi bassline. that structure evolves step by step until the break introduces strong open hit-hats followed by another flute line.

derrick carters seminal sound patrol album originally released in 1994, * sweetened - no lemon*, will see a re-release in january 2016. the alias provided a place for carter to explore deeper and sometimes more atmospheric styles. the sound patrol record originally came out via chicagos organico label, while derrick carters own arts & labour is handling the reissue. the triple vinyl re issue adds four new unreleased tracks. the whole album has been re mastered for 2016. this follows a limited edition sampler 12 inch released in 2015 which contained another 2 unreleased tracks.

aside from being the originator and creator of the osmose sound 7inch vinyl record stabiliser, dj osmose is a purveyor of the finest house and disco concoctions, a man who has clearly dedicated his life to both house culture and the vinyl format - we dig. this time hes up on the newly crowned morgan avenue edits, and first up is a collaboration with bydesign, a track entitled red light disco, and one that is a total discoid banger, backed by one hell of a baseline. hazardous disco sees the man go solo and deeper than before, serving up a beautiful, vocal-laden, string-heavy disco joint for the modern ear, followed by the smooth-as-silk groove of i dont wanna know. stunningly fab.

youth isn’t usually associated with wisdom, or depth or complexity for that matter. most 22 year-olds are still figuring out how a washing machine works but in the case of howes (the solo project of manchester-based john howes) he’s making electronic music that is operating on innovative and experimental levels one might expect from a hardened career musician hitting their stride. having released a more house-oriented 12” on melodic a couple of years ago, his debut album proper is a record that is as expressive as it is cohesive. it’s a release that floats between nocturnal stillness and insomniac driven intensity. the shift, howes says, “comes from the forced and narrow nature of a lot of electronic music. most modern electronic music to me is too safe in terms of ambition, sound design and intention.”

not an animal return with their 2nd installment, this time from ess o ess (aka chris stoker and jamie blanco). their original offering, cantillate, isn t an easy beast to identify, being equal parts swamp-rock and techno. imagine you ve stumbled across an ephedrine and moonshine fueled rave in a deep louisiana bayoux in the year 3000, and you re close. add an out-there vocal refrain, and you ll start to appreciate why this is a particularly distinct record. relocate said rave to a some kind of space ship hitting hyperspace, with photon torpedoes fully armed, and you ll suddenly find yourself with the first remix, as created by ene records owner chida.

its not often you hear a techno record produced by a total of five people. when it happens, it’s usually to mark a passage and make a statement. sometimes it is a matter of celebrating a rita of passage, a shift into maturity and the embodiment of a new skin. this is what repitch is doing with the fourth and final installment in their “features” series, reuniting all the crew for the the final blast of what’s been a long and massive barrage of heavy techno. this is the collaboration to end them all: repitch founders ascion, d. carbone and shapenoise have shared the studio with longtime allies and. together, they explore a common ground made of pounding metallic percussions, gutwrenching bass and thick, furious grooves, with each producer bringing his own peculiar contributions to the table. this last installment marks the end of a process that accompanied repitch throughout its whole existence, thus enhancing the beginning of a new chapter in the label’s creative output.

ruhig comes back after one year with particles ep as first installment of a double ep on midgar. the record opens with particles, an atmospheric detroit influenced cut made out of synthlines dropping like voodoo spells, epic pads and fragmented beats. eddying follows up with a more direct approach to the dancefloor, 4/4 stomping beat and thin hi-hats backed by lasers and passionate ambiances. etere on the b-side gives the records an halfway breath, sounds like a late afternoon walk in the fields of a southern countryside village (with constructions going on somewhere nearby), before to start again with the sweet and eerie perle, where droney pinching drums are flooded by a swarm of dreamy fireflies. idiom to close the ep with a fast syncopated cut, showing the approach of ruhig to any form of musical expression and genre, far from traditional ambient or deep techno and going further, to reach out daring and more demanding levels.

crossing back on the floor. avion delivers 2 new techno slices packed with mastermind remixes by tripeo and blind observatory. the release starts with the ‘intro‘ which brings up the mood of the record with futuristic signal bleeps and a warm analogue pad surrounded by kicking and stuttering percussions. the original of ‘centum‘ starts slowly to bring up heavy bassline surrounded by bright noises and alternating noise swirl verbed to voices highlighting partial explosions to end with bleep and soft strings. crossing 006 this time welcomes two fantastic artists as remixer and lays down ‘centum‘ to tripeo and blind observatory for their re-­&#8208,,interpretation. tripeo stays on the rough and kicking side of techno and delivers with his interpretation packed with the original strings and an analogue synth noise accompanied by a straight drumwork and cutted hi hats a kicking weapon for the floor. the myterious blind observatory takes the vibe of the original and pumped it with an acid bass to create a parallel universe built by dreamy strings highlighting the rides to lose control in the perfect moment. a real dancefloor killer.

vertv, one of the most anticipated underground label, introduce their first release with the gifted and versatile house artist : mad rey. combining raw and warm house grooves, hip hop sampling skills, jamaican poetry and acid nervousness in a 4 tracks ep, this record is dedicated to experimental dance music with a deeply personal and sensitive sound. thought for longevity the ambitions of this new label is summarized on this epic record manifesto.

lisbons event promotor frenzy, kicks off 2016 with its first release, and its a massive one. portuguese house don pedro goya (classic music company, bloop, overall, music for freaks) delivers a functional deep dancefloor-ish theme - flux. rolling bassline, heavy mental atmosphere and four on the floor drums, turn this record into a very versatile and reliable one. on the b-side, the remix. archie hamilton simply did what he does best. vinyl only

there are also more frosty cuts that sound like a chilly autumn walk, tracks that feature emotive neo-classical piano pieces and suggestively rhythmic compositions that sooth your mind. the second half of the record touches on church like passages of synth heavy sounds, strikingly sad violins and lo-fi arrangements that sound, one hopes, a little like what you might hear as you pass from this life to the next.

back in soviet times when the official local music market was controlled by the biggest record monopoly in history melodiya, many local musicians who wanted to express themselves in actual form, released tapes themselves and spread it through a big underground market network called magnitizdat (short of magnetic tape release). it began in the 60s with soviet rock movement and illegal copies of foreign music which got through border with tourists, seamen and diplomats. in the late 80s you could find there many different shades of music from underground protest rock, post punk, avant-garde to a lot of electronic pop, local kind of italo disco and dj s mixtapes with a personal rap on top of it. plus seven records begins a sublable series of remastered edits which narrate about dance part of this story.

as mood ii swing, production duo lem springsteen and john ciafone became one of the most in-demand remixers in the late 90s. the duo s production career began modestly, however. after a failed attempt at r&b, the two turned to house music. early productions such as sylvano s * helpless* and wall of sound s *critical* were a step in the right direction, as were releases such as -i need a bitch- for cutting and -searchin - for groove on, but it was the duo s remixes of ultra naté s * free* for strictly rhythm that struck gold. the song became a huge hit and soon mood ii swing was remixing big-name producers like bt (-remember-) and king britt (* the reason*) as well as the next ultra naté single, * found a cure*, which also became a huge hit record around the world. then, as a testament to the duos success, the new york-based nervous have dug up the remixes mood ii swing did for the label during their seminal mid 90s period re mastered and re released on wax for 2016.

on november 13th, pnn records will release the debut album of its most enigmatic artist myr. diamondbacks make wonderful pets is more than just a strange name, it nine tracks represent an exciting evolution in myr.s trajectory as an artist. following his debut ep nobody knows avalon myr. seems to have dug deep and discovered another level to his sound. each of the tracks on the record are confidently offbeat and precisely composed.a little-bitty bowl (with b.hotton), mixes thunder sound-effects with glitchy synth bleeps, layering them above darker tones which build to a perfect storm in the middle. this 10 minute track fails to get boring and is representative of the album as a whole. myr.s ability to carry off strange hybrids is what makes his music unique. from the ghostly warbles of i think i hear them coming to the sunnier sounds of eleanor, myr.s disregard for the norm has lead to an exceptional record that surprises at every turn.

san fransisco meets nyc for the third release on fifth interval. rose bay from federsen sets the tone for the record: drenched in tape hiss, the warm pads and delays create a richly textured environment for deeper club sets or for 2am sessions on headphones. dub techno luminary brendon moller offers up two versions of the title track to complete the ep - one in his own name and the second under his ecologist guise. fans of the label will no doubt be well aware of moller s formidable discography, which includes 10 albums under a variety of aliases, exploring the outer reaches of dub music. coaxing two captivating versions from his studio in upstate new york, moller focusses on the chord stabs from the original for the echologist dub, pushing the stabs and percussion through the desk, twisting the tails through tape delay and creating new vistas through crafty use of panning and bona fide dub production techniques. closing with the outstanding tidal dub, moller dons his beat pharmacy cap and pushes the mammoth bassline to near speaker-crushing levels to create a deeply hypnotic groove that is accentuated by waves of ferric pads and fractured percussion.
